A lot of the Newcastle United players are stepping into the unknown on Tuesday night as they prepare to face AC Milan at the San Siro in the Champions League.

It is an incredible occasion for the Magpies, taking on one of world football’s most famous clubs, in an iconic stadium, in a game where they are considered equals competing against one another in Europe’s most prestigious tournament.

It is a far cry from relegation battles and ticking along under Mike Ashley, and Newcastle fans are absolutely relishing the opportunity that is in front of them. Thousands of supporters are travelling to Milan to be part of what should be an absolutely amazing atmosphere.

For the Newcastle players, this is their reward for such a strong 2022/23 season. They wanted to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League, and that is exactly what they did.

Their efforts have led them to the San Siro, in what could be quite a nerve-racking affair for the less experienced members of Eddie Howe‘s squad.

Luckily, Toon legend Alan Shearer has offered the players some defiant advice ahead of Tuesday night’s contest.

Alan Shearer wants Newcastle to ‘enjoy’ AC Milan challenge

Shearer has spoke to the Athletic ahead of the game against AC Milan, and has told the Newcastle players exactly what they must do.

“For what it’s worth, my advice to the players would be to soak it up, to enjoy the atmosphere because they must realise how much it means to us,” he said.

“Because this is football and you never know what can happen. Although, I suspect this isn’t going to be our last time in the Champions League.”

Newcastle legends can be made

Shearer is right, the Toon players must savour the moment and do their best to enjoy it. You never know when opportunities like this will come about again.

But this is not just a day out. It is the Champions League. Newcastle deserve to be there, and Howe will be planning to return to Tyneside with three points.

That will be easier said than done, but Howe is already planning changes to his starting XI for the game at the San Siro.

It has been reported that Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak will start for the Magpies.
