Dan Burn was the fifth and final player to sign for Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

The Magpies announced the deal shortly before the 11pm deadline, saving the biggest signing until last…because he’s really tall.

The 29-year-old arrives from Brighton for £13million, signing a two-and-a-half year deal at St James’ Park. Burn is a boyhood Toon fan, and was released by the club at the age of 11.

But he’s back in the North East now, and will hopefully play an important role in our fight against relegation.

The club’s announcement video was fantastic, using the classic 70s song ‘Disco Inferno’ by The Trammps, famous for its lyrics ‘burn baby burn’. As always, Newcastle’s social media continues to impress.

Following the announcement, Shearer sent Newcastle’s newest recruit a three-word message, simply saying ‘welcome home Dan’.

The Toon legend also came home to his boyhood club just like Burn has, going on to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer after a world record move.

While Burn’s arrival isn’t quite as blockbuster, he could be an astute signing at a pivotal time for the club. Newcastle have been desperate for defensive reinforcements, but Burn was the only centre-back to arrive last month.

Mehrdad Ghodoussi welcomes Burn to St James’ Park

Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi also reacted to the announcement on Twitter.

He wrote: “Some dreams are meant to be.. welcome back to where it all started Dan.”

It will be an emotional occasion when Burn makes his Toon debut – possibly against Everton next week under the lights at St James’ Park.

He has a chance to become a real Toon hero, and live out his childhood dreams.

Newcastle made sensible signings in January, and it looks like they’ve brought in the right characters for the relegation battle. Burn is a perfect example of this.
