Eddie Howe has been disappointed with Newcastle’s away form this season but his side came from behind to pick up an important three points and climb to eighth in the Premier League table.

Isak was “outstanding” against Forest and Joelinton was superb out wide once again, but club legend Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker were focused on a Newcastle player at the other end of the pitch.

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker on Dan Burn

Long-term injuries to Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman have centre-back a problem position at Newcastle over the past year.

Lloyd Kelly was signed to strengthen the defence this summer, but Howe has preferred a centre-back duo of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn this season.

That duo kept their spot at the back for the trip to Nottingham on Sunday, and they did brilliantly to restrict the hosts to only one goal.

Shearer and Lineker were keen to discuss Burn on The Rest is Football podcast, and they were in total agreement about where he is at his best.

Lineker said: “With Dan Burn, I think it suits him better in the middle there. If he gets a winger against him who is quick, it’s really difficult for him, I think. Agreed?”

Shearer then replied: “Yeah, I would agree with that. And he loves a fight, he loves a scrap, you know.

“If anyone wants to go against him, like Chris Wood today, then he really, really enjoys that, and he has done really well, big Dan Burn has.”

Newcastle in the market for a new centre-back

Even after signing Kelly, Newcastle were eager to sign a top-class centre-back in the summer with sporting director Paul Mitchell pursuing a £65m deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Newcastle ended up emptyhanded and reports now suggest that Newcastle would prefer to sign a right winger in January, with plans to sign a centre-back shelved.

However, the Magpies continue to be linked with centre-back targets.

Newcastle are admirers of Loic Bade while Guehi is still on Newcastle’s radar for 2025.
