Kieran Trippier was named as North East player of the year by local journalists last night after his performances for Newcastle United in 2023.

The defender was brilliant in a year which saw the Magpies reach the Carabao Cup final and visit Wembley for the first time in over two decades as well as qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2004.

Trippier posted on Instagram with himself holding the award which prompted responses from teammates Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon as well as Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.

Trippier deserves award for Newcastle displays

Although some would argue that he had his worst moments in a Newcastle shirt at the end of 2023, his overall performances were the biggest reason as to why team had been so successful in the first place.

The now 33-year-old adds so much experience and leadership to a team with a number of players who have never even played in Europe before and so he was integral to their Champions League hopes.

Not only was he a brilliant addition defensively when they signed him from Atletico Madrid in 2022, he’s also helped to transform the attack as he’s already racked up double digits for assist in the Premier League this season.

It really makes you wonder where exactly Newcastle would be without the efforts of Trippier who not only elevated the squad with his performances but pushed his teammates to work harder.

On Instagram, Trippier posted: “Delighted to win the 2023 player of the year award. (Trophy almost bigger than me 😂)”.

Trippier still has a lot to give

There were some concerns that Newcastle had already seen the best of Trippier in 2023 and that things were only downhill from now on as he enters the twilight of his career.

However, these last few weeks the former Tottenham man has looked more like his usual self and is keen to get the team back into Europe for next season.

The England international was an unfortunate casualty in the win against Wolves at the weekend as he was forced off in the second half, though he’s remaining positive and awaiting results after a scan on his calf.

Trippier still has a huge part to play in the future of the club and will be looking to get the side back amongst the elite next season.
