Alan Brazil doesn’t think £45m Newcastle player is good enough to play for England

TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil has revealed that he doesn’t think Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has what it takes to get into the England team.

Despite winning player of the tournament in the Under-21 Euros in the summer, the £45m signing was again snubbed as Gareth Southgate named his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Alan Brazil was not surprised to see Gordon’s name omitted from the squad and believes that the quality that England have going forwards is just too good for him to get in.

Brazil says England have better than Gordon

England do have a lot of quality in their attack and it is always going to be difficult to break into a settled team that has largely been together for the last couple of tournaments now.

But, of course, there are still some players who get selected despite not being in good enough form for their clubs. Gareth Southgate quite clearly already has his players he can rely on and has proven in the past that he is likely to select one of his favourites unless forced to do otherwise.

TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil does not think Gordon should get into the England side, even despite a his form for Newcastle and a number of players dropping out through injury.

On the show, Brazil said: “I’m not sure. The squad England have, especially in his position – midfield, wide. He’s not getting in.”

It would be a fair argument if all of England’s wingers were in top form, but Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish have been included in the latest squad in Gordon’s position despite having just one Premier League goal between them.

The 22-year-old already has four goals and two assists as well as winning two penalties for his team this season and is hungry for more.

Grealish and Rashford may be more experienced and more reliable players for Southgate, but if no one else can get into the team because of that then they can’t get the experience they need.

England omission a blessing in disguise

The last thing Newcastle need right now is an injury to Anthony Gordon who is just about the only starting outfield player to avoid picking up a knock in the last few weeks.

Being selected for England would have been a huge honour for the attacker, but for Newcastle it would just mean that Gordon, who has been arguably their player of the season, would not get a much needed two weeks rest.

Signs of fatigue were already showing against Bournemouth and the Magpies cannot afford to lose any more players if they are to stay in contention for a place in the top four or five in the Premier League.
