The transfer window is shut and now it looks like Newcastle United are going contract crazy having just tied down Callum Wilson and soon Bruno Guimaraes.

It sounds like the Newcastle board aren’t done there either with inews reporting that another stalwart is set to be offered a short-term extension similar to the one Callum Wilson just signed.

At one point it looked like Fabian Schar‘s time at Newcastle was up. Rarely used by Steve Bruce it looked like the Swiss international would have to leave to revive his career.

Eddie Howe has full faith in Fabian Schar

Fortunately for Schar (and all of us) Steve Bruce was relieved of his duties following the takeover and Eddie Howe was brought in to steer the ship.

Howe clearly saw something in Schar that Bruce didn’t and he was reinstated to the first-team. Last season he and newcomer Sven Botman forged the best defensive partnership we’ve seen at Newcastle for many years.

Now into his sixth season at Newcastle, Schar is one of the first names on the teamsheet which is why the player hailed as ‘unbelievable‘ by his teammate Matt Targett is in line for a new deal.

It was only in April last year that Schar signed a two-year deal with the club, but it seems they want to keep him around even longer.

Newcastle didn’t sign back-up for Schar in the summer

Newcastle failed to sign another centre-back in the summer with many feeling it was on area that desperately needed more bodies.

It was a fear that was almost realised very early on in the season after both Botman and Schar picked up knocks that threatened to keep them both out of the same game. It was a rare time that an international break was welcomed.

Hopefully Newcastle and Schar can come to an arrangement and sign an extension to the deal he signed just last year.
