Achraf Lazaar’s Newcastle career has never really got going.

The defender arrived in 2016 ahead of the Championship campaign, but struggled to break into Rafa Benitez’s side.

Since arriving, Lazaar has made just 10 appearances for Newcastle, with only four coming in the league.

While Lazaar appears to be far from first-team quality, does the Moroccan international deserve another chance in the North East?

Can Lazaar play backup to Dummett?

In the summer, it was clear that Newcastle needed a left-back.

Paul Dummett is first choice at St James’ Park, but the local lad has no competition.

Javi Manquillo has played there at times, but the Spaniard is also the backup right-back as well.

However, after another disastrous transfer window, Newcastle failed to acquire another left sided defender.

Meanwhile, Lazaar was unable to secure a move away from the Magpies.

The defender reportedly wants to fight for his career at Newcastle by playing for the reserves, which could claw him back into contention.

If the former Palermo man is willing to fight for his place, then it can only help Newcastle.

Dummett needs competition, and Lazaar can offer something totally different. The 26-year-old is a much more attacking option than Dummett, which could give Benitez’s team another dimension going forward.

By no means should he replace Dummett as the Newcastle left-back, but he should be drafted back in as a backup.

I mean he can’t be any worse than Manquillo…
