Newcastle United’s latest signing Aaron Ramsdale has won the respect of many fans after his brilliant gesture before Friday night’s draw against Espanyol.

After almost three months away, the Magpies were back at St James’ Park ahead of a busy 2025/26 campaign. This time, there were some new faces for fans to see.

Seung-soo Park started for Newcastle United and made a positive impression with the fans and Eddie Howe, who could give him more minutes in the first team after showing his quality during games against Team K-League and Tottenham Hotspur in South Korea before Friday’s game.

Additionally, Aaron Ramsdale made his first start since signing for Newcastle on loan in late July. The 27-year-old made a quick impact, saving a penalty in the first half while looking confident on the ball, even while he was under pressure.

Ramsdale is expected to be second-choice to Nick Pope at Newcastle, but his experience could soon see him become No.1 on Tyneside. While Ramsdale impressed on his debut, an unseen gesture was captured by a Newcastle fan in attendance, which is sure to make fans love him.

Aaron Ramsdale hands Newcastle United fan his shirt in unseen moment

Ramsdale shared his excitement of playing at St James’ Park upon signing for Newcastle, and he will be doing it much more often than he has previously. While his move is only a loan, the Magpies have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of next season.

The England international has already integrated himself into the social groups at the club, too. Ramsdale has been given the nickname ‘Ramma’ at Newcastle and has looked all smiles since signing.

Fans were sceptical about Ramsdale joining Newcastle, but he has since won the admiration of fans after a video was shared of him handing his training shirt to a young fan.

The video caption states that the young fan was hurt by a stray ball which landed in the stands. Ramsdale was quick to check on the fan and hug him. The gesture was met with applause by the supporters behind the goal, and even more followed when Ramsdale took off his training shirt and handed it to the fan as a gesture of goodwill.

Aaron Ramsdale brings much-needed experience to Newcastle United

While the shot-stopper has experienced many relegations in his career, there is no doubt that Ramsdale is a top goalkeeper and deserves the opportunity to prove himself at a big club like Newcastle.

Ramsdale was Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper before the signing of David Raya, and did an excellent job between the sticks, keeping 14 clean sheets during the 2022/23 season.

While Pope is a quality goalkeeper, Ramsdale possesses much better ability with the ball at his feet, a quality Howe expects his goalkeeper to have. Like Pope, Ramsdale has experience of playing in the Champions League, so he will be aware of what it takes to perform under the lights on the biggest stage.

Signing Ramsdale makes complete sense for Newcastle. Howe now has a quality successor to Pope in Ramsdale, a player who has played international football more recently and still has a lot of time to develop.
