In a season which has been decimated by a never-ending injury list, even Newcastle United’s loan players are picking up knocks.

Newcastle will be without several first team players once again this weekend as they travel to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, but it’s not only the players currently at the club who are concerned with injuries.

This past weekend Swansea boss Luke William shared how Harrison Ashby has suffered yet another injury after only just returning from a hamstring problem which kept him out for almost two months.

Newcastle’s injury problems are just getting worse

It won’t impact Newcastle’s campaign this time round as he’s not part of the current first team, but it’s still not ideal to hear that one of your loanees is also having a tough time with knocks.

The £3m defender is yet to make his Newcastle debut since signing in January 2023 alongside Anthony Gordon, but he was finally enjoying some first-team minutes in South Wales.

Ashby has so far made 16 appearances in the Championship having already dealt with his hamstring injury, and he now looks to miss another handful of fixtures in the coming weeks.

Swansea boss Williams was disappointed with the injury to say the least but refused to put a date on when they expect the Newcastle right-back to return to the team, adding that it looks like it will be a matter of weeks.

On Ashby, Williams said: “He has a muscular problem so he is going to be a few weeks. We are not going to be able to put an exact time on it yet.”

Ashby’s future at Newcastle looks uncertain

Not only will the injuries worry the coaching staff at Newcastle, but the signing of Tino Livramento raises some questions regarding the future of Ashby on Tyneside.

When the now 22-year-old was first signed it was almost expected that he would be the understudy to Kieran Trippier, learning from the England international to one day perhaps take over from him.

But to then go and spend £40m on someone else in that same position makes you wonder why the former West Ham man was brought into the team in the first place, especially when he’s older than Livramento.

Unless Trippier leaves Newcastle in the summer, which is certainly still a possibility, it’s difficult to see how Ashby will get anywhere near the first team without another injury crisis in the squad.
