£39m Newcastle ace reveals club’s ambitious future plans

Harvey Barnes is under no illusions about what the Newcastle United hierarchy expect this season.

Despite having only just joined Newcastle in a £39 million deal, Harvey Barnes is already aware of the pressure on the squad to kick on again this season.

Eddie Howe led the Magpies to an impressive fourth-place finish in the Premier League last time out. Champions League football will finally be returning to St James’ Park this season. However, that alone isn’t enough for the Tyneside outfit.

Barnes has revealed the extent of the ambition being harboured at the club following their Champions League qualification, saying, “this year is going to be building on that, having a successive campaign in that…hopefully away from that there are opportunities to win trophies and have another great league campaign…you can see it’s an ambitious club. They’re not going to be happy achieving what they did last year and leaving it at that,” as quoted by Chronicle Live.

Barnes has already lifted silverware in his career. He was at Leicester City when they triumphed in the 2021 FA Cup final, although he wasn’t on the pitch that day. He will now be desperate to add to his medal collection with Newcastle.

Newcastle preparing to dominate

There’s plenty of reason to believe that the Magpies can fulfil their ambitions in the near future. The ownership are willing to back the club, and in Howe they have an inspirational figurehead to get behind.

However, there will need to be patience from the club’s hierarchy too. The likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United won’t simply step aside for Newcastle. A resurgent Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino could make it harder for Barnes and his teammates to reach the top four again, as well.

Newcastle have matched these ambitions with their business in the transfer market so far this summer. Alongside Barnes, Sandro Tonali has joined the club to strengthen the midfield. Howe has also spoken about his wish for further reinforcements.

Newcastle are assembling a squad with domination in mind. Barnes will certainly be hoping to play a key role in helping the club reach those lofty heights over the next few years.
