One of Newcastle United’s loan players has now fallen out of favour at his new club and his season looks to be all but over.

Newcastle had sent Jeff Hendrick out to Sheffield Wednesday this season with the midfielder having no future on Tyneside since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager.

Now, despite Sheffield Wednesday sitting in the relegation zone in the Championship, the Owls have decided not to included Hendrick in their 25-man squad for the rest of the season.

Newcastle loan player left out in the cold once again

Signed under Steve Bruce in 2020, Hendrick would go on to play 22 Premier League games in his first season at Newcastle before being effectively cut out of the team with just three appearances in his next campaign.

The midfielder was then sent out on loan to QPR for the remainder of the 2021-22 season before joining Reading temporarily in the summer of 2022 and then Wednesday in 2023.

Hendrick has been unable to find a stable footballing home since leaving Burnley and now, with his contract expiring in six month at Newcastle, he will once again be looking to relocate.

It may be that the now 32-year-old will have to drop down the leagues if he’s struggling to get into a side threatened by relegation from the second division and it certainly does not reflect well on him.

Newcastle look for total rebuild in the summer

Ever since the PIF-backed takeover of the club was confirmed Newcastle have been looking to get rid of some of the fringe players in the squad who were on overly inflated wages thanks to the previous owner.

The likes of Javier Manquillo, Dwight Gayle, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow and Federico Fernandez have all left the club in the last two years, but there are still a few who remain on Newcastle’s wages.

Thankfully for the Magpies, the majority of those will see their contracts expire in the summer freeing up some space in the wage budget.

When you consider the fact Hendrick will have been on tens of thousands of pounds a week and yet couldn’t get a game for Newcastle in over two years, you realise how difficult it must have been for the new owners to really invest in the team.
