One of Newcastle United’s key players suffered an unfortunate injury earlier in the season which nobody could help him understand.
Harvey Barnes had a great start to his career at Newcastle scoring in the first game of the season against Aston Villa, but his excitement for the new campaign would soon be cut short after picking up a foot injury in the away trip to Sheffield United.
Speaking to Newcastle, the winger has now shared why they had such a tough time dealing with the injury as it was a very uncommon one for a player to pick up.
Newcastle star left very frustrated by injury
For most players dealing with an injury can be frustrating, particularly at the start of the season when you’ve worked so hard in pre-season to build your fitness back up to where it needs to be.
However, there’s usually a process you go through immediately after and you can understand what exactly has happened and how long you’re going to be out for, but for Barnes that was made very difficult due to the type of injury.
The £38m signing had asked around, even in other sports, to figure out what kind of injury he had suffered, but ultimately Newcastle were left without answers and forced to deal with the problem in whatever way they could.
Eddie Howe had been hoping he could make a return from injury before the turn of the year, but it wasn’t until the beginning of February when he would come back into the Newcastle team against Luton, marking his return with a huge goal to earn them a point.
On his injury, Barnes said: “Asking around, no one’s really dealt with this injury. We were almost going into other sports to find out how they’ve rehabbed it. It was really unusual. And even more so for a player. It’s like, ‘How has that happened?’
“No injury is good, but it’s not your common hamstring where you can go, ‘Right, I can understand why that’s happened’. This is just like, ‘How on earth has this happened? What are the chances of this happening?’”

Barnes offers Newcastle so much needed depth
For too long Newcastle have been relying on Anthony Gordon’s quality to see them through games, and the former Everton man has hardly had a rest in the last few months given the injury crisis.
Barnes return not only means that Newcastle can get some fresh legs on the pitch late on in games, but they will also hope it gives Gordon a bit of a boost In energy as they head to the business end of the season.
There are now some huge Premier League games coming up as well as an FA Cup quarter final against Man City that they will need to be at their best for, and Barnes will be hoping to make a big impact in the final games of his first season at the club.
