One Newcastle United star has now claimed that this has been the hardest season of his career so far on a personal level.

Newcastle have suffered a lot of injuries this year with Eddie Howe at times very limited in his options for a matchday, but few have suffered like Joe Willock this season.

Speaking to NUFCTV, Willock shared how it had been very difficult for him recovering from a hamstring injury back in November only to then go and pick up another injury that would see him ruled out for months.

Newcastle have really been missing £25m star

Willock was very unfortunate to pick up and injury at the end of last season when Champions League qualification was pretty much already wrapped up, and after suffering a set back he was out longer than expected.

After making his return in November, the £25m signing would go on to pick up an Achilles injury shortly after and miss the next few months, keeping him out for most of the season.

On a personal level it was very difficult for Willock who was left frustrated, and Newcastle’s results on the pitch had also suffered as they were really missing the energy and drive of the 24-year-old in midfield.

When he made his return from injury against Arsenal it was obvious to see how much he impacts the team, and against Wolves he put in a brilliant display to show Newcastle fans what it is they had been missing these last few months.

On his injury, Willock said: “I think I said it in a few interviews that it’s probably been the hardest season for me in terms of injuries. It was a big learning curve, some lonely days in the gym and I think I’ve tried to come back strong for the team.”

Willock will have a huge part to play in the next few months

Newcastle look very unlikely to finish in the top four now after their poor run of form in December and January which saw them drop to mid table in the Premier League.

However, all is not lost as they are still hopeful of finishing in the top six and Willock is going to have a huge say in how Newcastle finish the season after his top performances in his last few games.

The former Arsenal man gives Eddie Howe’s midfield something a bit different in terms of his pace and ability to drive with the ball, and it’s been desperately missed in the last few weeks.

Howe will be hoping that he can keep his star man fit and available for what’s left of the season as he hopes to make a big push ahead of an exciting summer and what will be a huge year next season.
