It must have felt like deja-vu for Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron last night after Paraguay failed to make their one-man advantage count against Peru in the CONMEBAL World Cup Qualifiers.
Miguel Almiron was part of the Newcastle side who failed to take full advantage of Liverpool going a man down in the recent Premier League clash.
Despite valiant efforts, Newcastle, who held a one goal lead, failed to add to their tally and ultimately threw away that lead and ended up on the end of a 2-1 defeat.
Almiron had a golden opportunity to snatch the win for Paraguay
Last night on international duty, Miguel Almiron must have been reliving the nightmare after Peru found themselves having to play the second-half with ten men.
Paraguay absolutely peppered the Peruvian goal, hitting the post four times and bringing out some world-class saves from their goalkeeper, Pedro Gallese.
Newcastle’s flying winger had a chance of his own to snatch the win, playing a trademark one-two after cutting in from the right wing – it was like watching him link up with Bruno Guimaraes – Miggy found himself one-on-one with Gallese but unleashed a tame shot straight at the ‘keeper and another chance went begging. Almiron will be in line to face Venezuela on Tuesday
One piece of comfort Almiron can take away from the game is that although Paraguay didn’t win, they also didn’t lose and that’s still a point on the board in the World Cup Qualifying group.
The South American road to the World Cup is a long one with each Country to play 18 games. so Paraguay and Almiron will have plenty more opportunities to find their way.
Paraguay face Venezuela on Tuesday and Miguel Almiron will no doubt be part of that Paraguayan starting line-up as one of their most high-profile players.
