Newcastle United’s goalkeeper situation is an absolute mess, and suddenly feels unlikely to change during the January transfer window.
It looked for all the world that Martin Dubravka would leave, with the Slovakian receiving an offer to join Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia.
However, Newcastle are trying to keep Dubravka, as he enjoys a solid run in the starting XI in the absence of Nick Pope.
He has helped the Magpies win eight games in a row, and Newcastle fans made it clear to Dubravka that they want him to stay during the FA Cup win over Bromley.
That now looks like it will happen, despite Nick Pope nearing a return from injury.
Newcastle United goalkeeper ‘frustrated’

All the while, Odysseas Vlachodimos cannot get a game.
Newcastle United signed him for £20million in the summer, with his arrival coinciding with Elliot Anderson joining Nottingham Forest for £35million. Both deals were done for PSR reasons, but Forest definitely benefitted the most from the arrangement.
When all keepers have been fit, Vlachodimos has been Newcastle’s third choice. And that has proven to be an issue.
According to the i Paper, Vlachodimos is frustrated by his current situation at St James’ Park. However, he has no plans to leave the club.
What Odysseas Vlachodimos was told when he joined Newcastle United
Since joining in the summer, Vlachodimos has only made one competitive appearance for Newcastle United. That came in the second half of the Carabao Cup third round win over AFC Wimbledon.
The Greece international had been tipped to start against Bromley on Saturday, but was surprisingly left on the bench.
With that in mind, it is understandable why Vlachodimos is not happy about his situation.
And it is even more understandable given the assurances that were made to him when he signed his Newcastle United contract.
According to the i Paper, Vlachodimos was told he would be Newcastle’s backup goalkeeper and would challenge Nick Pope for a place in the starting XI.
That was at a time when Dubravka looked likely to leave, but the 35-year-old remained on Tyneside and has stayed ahead of Vlachodimos in the Toon pecking order.
Vlachodimos’ attitude has been praised, but it remains to be seen when he will get another chance to play for Newcastle United. It is no wonder he is frustrated.
