Eddie Howe has handed Newcastle United debuts to four academy players this season, and Travis Hernes wants to become the fifth.
The Newcastle boss has had to lean on youth at various points this season, largely down to the club’s relentless injury crisis.
We saw Ben Parkinson made his Toon debut off the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, while Amadou Diallo, Alex Murphy and Michael Ndiweni played a few minutes in the 4-1 victory over Chelsea.
On top of that, we have seen Lewis Miley emerge as a key player after making his debut late last season.
Now Travis Hernes wants to take that step, having featured in a couple of matchday squads as of late. He was an unused substitute during away wins at Fulham and Aston Villa.
Travis Hernes eager to make Newcastle debut in 2024
The 18-year-old has been speaking to Norwegian outlet TV2 about wanting to make his senior debut in 2024, stating that he is now always training with the first-team.
“When you train with the team every day, and are taken out on the bench, it shows that you are doing something right,” he said.
“I must continue to do my best and show that I deserve that place in the squad.”

Going to be a big ask for Newcastle teenager this season
Hernes is really enjoying training with the first-team, and it has only enhanced his desire to make his Toon debut.
Hopefully we get to see him in action soon, but in truth it could be very difficult for him to make his debut this season.
While Newcastle have injury problems, the returns of Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson could end Hernes’ hopes of featuring this season. They will be thrust back into the side when they return to fitness, while Hernes also has Joe White ahead of him in the pecking order. The 21-year-old was on the bench against Luton last weekend, while Hernes missed out.
But the teenager is one for the future, and is clearly a player who Newcastle believe can have an impact at senior level in the coming years.
He is hoping to make that impact this year, with Hernes eager to make his Newcastle United debut in 2024. Good luck to him!
