£13m player now says he never wants to leave Newcastle United after contract extension

When it comes to Newcastle United’s player of the season so far, there are not many standout candidates.

The Magpies’ top stars are yet to burst into life. Alexander Isak has only scored once, Bruno Guimaraes has only excelled in flashes, and Anthony Gordon has blown hot and cold.

Nick Pope is probably in contention for that honour, with the Newcastle United goalkeeper responsible for a lot of the points that the Magpies have picked up.

However, Newcastle’s top performer is arguably Dan Burn.

Dan Burn is excelling for Newcastle United again

At 32-years-old and on the back of a really difficult season at left-back, Burn looks rejuvenated in black and white.

He is playing at centre-back alongside Fabian Schar in the absence of Sven Botman, and looks so much more comfortable.

Burn has been Newcastle’s most consistent performer, and it comes at a time when his Toon future is a bit more certain. It was confirmed last week that Burn has triggered a contract extension at Newcastle, amid concerns that his deal ran out in 2025.

However, that is not the case. In fact, Burn is having no thoughts about ever leaving St James’ Park.

Following Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton, Burn spoke to iNews about his future on Tyneside.

“I’d love to finish my career here,” he said.

“I’ve moved back home now, my kids are back with their family, we get to see our family a lot and it was always the plan to finish my career here. We’ve just got to wait and see on that, we’ve got a lot of very good players here and we’re going in that upward trajectory so you’ve got to keep trying to go for as long as you can.

“I feel like I’ve been playing well this season, I’m not a player who is just going to be happy being a good trainer and sitting on the bench. I want to play and I do believe I can be playing in this team.”

Eddie Howe could soon have a tough decision to make regarding Dan Burn

Ever since his £13million arrival from Brighton, Dan Burn has exceeded expectations in a Newcastle United shirt. He has proven to be an outstanding acquisition, and key figure during this era of the club.

He is still an important player on Tyneside almost three years after his arrival, and that is a testament to his performances. While Newcastle were disappointing on Saturday against Brighton, Burn can be happy with his contribution.

Burn has made it clear that he wants to end his career at Newcastle, whilst also stating that he wants to keep playing rather than just be a squad player. Based on this season’s evidence, that will not be a problem.

However, it could change when Sven Botman returns. He is still out injured, but Botman is due to return for Newcastle in late December. Once he is fit, Howe will have a tough decision to make.

Does he make Botman wait on the bench and stick with Burn? Or does Botman walk back into the starting XI? And if that does happen, will Howe then opt to put Burn back in at left-back? That might not be a great idea given how much he struggled there last season, while Lewis Hall is making that position his own right now.
