Newcastle signed two players on transfer deadline day, and so did Arsenal.
While the Magpies added Emil Krafth and Andy Carroll, the Gunners splashed the cash on Kieran Tierney and David Luiz. Unai Emery’s side have had defensive issues, but they’ve made a late effort to rectify them in the transfer window.
However, will Newcastle have to deal with Arsenal’s latest recruits at St James’ Park? Yes and no.
According to Arsenal’s official website, David Luiz will train with his new teammates ahead of Sunday’s game.
However, Tierney won’t make his debut. The Scottish defender is 4-6 weeks away from fitness, meaning that Newcastle have one less player to worry about.
The possibility of coming up against Luiz is an intriguing one. He’s a player who you never know what you’re going to get from. He can be dominant and catastrophic in the same game. But he is certainly an improvement on Arsenal’s other centre-back options.
Newcastle will be hoping to exploit Arsenal’s shaky defence on Sunday, but if Luiz can settle quickly, he might be able to tighten things up for the Gunners.
The Brazilian’s arrival from Chelsea makes Newcastle’s already tough task a little bit harder.
