Why Eddie Howe was unhappy with Yankuba Minteh during Brighton vs Newcastle United

Yankuba Minteh has certainly made quite the impact against Newcastle United this season.

Minteh was technically a Newcastle United player last summer but left the club for Brighton without ever actually playing a first-team game under Eddie Howe

The forward has scored seven goals in 34 appearances for the Seagulls this season and two of them have come against Newcastle. Minteh scored in their FA Cup win at St James’ Park in March and again in the 1-1 Premier League draw on Sunday at the Amex Stadium.

Minteh shocked Newcastle fans with his goal celebration against them on Sunday, while the Newcastle United manager was also seemingly less than impressed about one particular incident.

Eddie Howe unhappy with Yankuba Minteh during Brighton vs Newcastle United

As noted by The Athletic’s Chris Waugh on social media platform X, Howe was not pleased with the 20-year-old.

Howe seemingly took exception to a first-half challenge from Minteh on Tino Livramento, who then needed time to get back to his feet.

A foul was given but nothing more than that. Around four minutes later, Minteh cut inside Livramento to fire Brighton ahead, although Alexander Isak would later respond from the penalty spot.

Why Newcastle United sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton

Howe has confirmed Newcastle didn’t want to sell Minteh but were forced to in order to meet their obligations for the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

In an ideal world, the club would have kept the Gambian international. Jacob Murphy has been in inspired form for Newcastle this season but does not have a natural back-up in the squad.

Financial rules, however, dictated that both Minteh and Elliot Anderson had to be sold to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.

That has certainly come back to bite Newcastle this season…
