Anthony Gordon’s reaction to Newcastle United’s defeat to Sunderland strikes the wrong note.

Taking to Instagram after Newcastle United lost 1-0 away at Sunderland, Toon star Gordon vowed that the players would look to make it up to supporters later this week.

Indeed, on his story, Gordon posted the message: “Totally underperformed today in a game that would have meant so much to everyone. We can only apologise, reset and try to make it right on Wednesday.”

Who was Newcastle United’s most disappointing player vs Sunderland?

The England international is, of course, referring to Newcastle United’s clash against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday at St James’ Park.

While it’s a game that Eddie Howe’s side obviously need to be taking very seriously, even winning that won’t make it up to the fans.

Anthony Gordon vows that Newcastle United will make up for Sunderland defeat but they can’t

Though not to downplay the importance of Wednesday’s game, it does pale into insignificance to what happened on Sunday to a degree.

Losing the Tyne-Wear derby is one thing. To have performed so badly – Gordon included – is another thing entirely.

Beating Fulham is a must, but winning would not right the wrongs of their performance at the Stadium of Light.

The rivalry with Sunderland goes so much deeper than a quarter-final that Newcastle will be expected to win anyway. Of all the games not to show up in, that was the worst one.

Finish this sentence, the worst thing about Newcastle United’s defeat to Sunderland was _

Having to hear about it until at least March, would be my answer!

How Newcastle United stars can eventually make fans feel better about their loss to Sunderland

Sadly for the Newcastle United squad, there’s only one way they’ll be able to appease the fans after such a dismal defeat.

That is by beating the Black Cats in convincing fashion at St James’ when they visit for the return Premier League fixture in March.

There’s an awful lot of football to be played between now and then and, frankly, little about this team right now would suggest they will do that well.

Newcastle were dreadful against Sunderland and that cannot be forgotten.

Cup progress is the very least fans should expect at this point.
