Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after Steve Bruce delivered some pretty pessimistic comments in his pre-match press conference, ahead of the Tottenham game on Sunday.
The Chronicle quote the Magpies boss as saying: ‘We can’t think we can go and play against the top teams and match them just in a game of football – we have to do something different, tactically. We did it well against the top teams last year. Let’s hope we can do the same again this year.’
We’re aware that the likes of Tottenham have vastly better players in some areas of the field, such as Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld.
However, Bruce is being rather pessimistic here – he needs to be telling his players that they can achieve anything, even if he doesn’t genuinely believe that.
We presume that Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester didn’t go into each game of their title-winning campaign thinking the same as Bruce said in his press conference. Football is all about belief, and it is up to the Magpies boss to inject that into his squad.
After all, we managed to beat Spurs last season, as well as Manchester United and Chelsea.
There was even a 2-2 draw against Manchester City to be proud of. We can definitely take on the big boys.
Anything is possible in football, and we need our manager to make the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron feel like they’re capable of walking on water.
These kind of flair players are the ones who’ll win us games through confidence alone.
Let’s see what the Toon Army on Twitter said about Bruce’s comments…

Frightening how often he uses the words hope, hopefully and hopeful.
His mindset is we are not a top team and lets lower expectations and get on the back foot before a ball is kicked because I haven’t got a scooby tactically.

Pleased he is not my boss, he is insulting the players in the team. Not a way to inspire your employees or give them confidence in the management team. Bruces own boss should be questioning his man management skills….oh forgot, he has none either😂

So basically “hi lads these lot are better than you so just sit tight with 10 behind the ball and hope for the best yeah?”

We can’t even match Brighton for a game of football

Imagine how hard it must be for our players to get fired up with clown like this giving the pre-match motivational talk.
