What Martin Dubravka said immediately after Newcastle beat Man United

Newcastle United beat Manchester United on Sunday, much to the delight of former Red Devil Martin Dubravka.

Dubravka was on the bench for Newcastle, providing backup for Nick Pope at St James’ Park. It was an interesting afternoon for the Slovakian, as it was the first time he was involved in the fixture this season despite it being the third meeting.

The 34-year-old started the season on loan with Manchester United, where he went in search of more regular minutes.

However, that did not happen. It resulted in him being recalled to Tyneside in January, where he is back to being Eddie Howe’s second choice.

But because he was involved in the Carabao Cup for Manchester United before January, it meant he was ineligible for the final at Wembley. He could not feature for Newcastle, and actually received a medal due to Erik ten Hag’s side lifting the trophy.

Dubravka was allowed to be involved on Sunday, and was delighted after the game following the Magpies’ 2-0 win.

Following the win, the club have released behind the scenes footage of the celebrations. The Newcastle players can be seen returning to the dressing room, where they are met by Paul Dummett, who was not in the squad.

He spoke to Dubravka, asking him: “Are you happy?”

Dubravka replied: “Yes, happy. Come on man. Why would I not be.”

Dummett was clearly having a bit of fun with Dubravka, but the goalkeeper would not hide his delight at Newcastle beating the club he called home at the start of the campaign.

His move to Old Trafford did not go to plan at all, and it is good to have him back. He is an excellent understudy to Pope, who kept yet another clean sheet on Sunday.

Having Dubravka back at the club means we have even more depth, and it was a real shame to see him depart during the summer. He has rarely let Newcastle United down, and his affinity to the Magpies has not been deterred despite the months he spent in Manchester.

As he says, why would he not be happy that the Magpies absolutely battered Man United on Sunday?!
