Newcastle United were brought crashing back down to earth on Saturday in the Premier League.

After winning all of their games following Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory, Jason Tindall’s side slumped to a heavy defeat to a Champions League rival.

Aston Villa thrashed Newcastle 4-1 to move two points behind them in the Premier League table.

Clearly, that was a huge setback for Tindall, who has been in charge while Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is reccovering from pneumonia.

Still, it’s difficult to be too disappointed. The team have been excellent since making history at Wembley and were playing their third match in a week. With only a reasonably small squad from which to choose, it just looked a match too far for them.

Villa are a quality side, losing only once at home all season. Context is important. Newcastle remain in the driving seat for Champions League qualification.

Indeed, the messaging from the dressing room appeared to reflect that.

According to The Chronicle, the Newcastle media team quickly told journalists that post-match interviews for the written press would not be taking place.

Instead, it’s claimed that a short inquest among the players was held. It was believed to have been a “constructive” chat led by senior figures within the team.

That is promising to hear. There is no need to overreact. Newcastle were thrashed at Villa Park in April 2023 but still qualified for the Champions League.

Newcastle United offered quickfire response after Aston Villa defeat

To overlook any team right now would be a huge mistake.

Still, Newcastle will certainly fancy their chances at getting back to winning ways when relegation-threatened Ipswich come to St James’ Park on Saturday. 

That should, at least on paper, offer the team the perfect chance to respond. The Champions League race is bound to be full of twists and turns, but Newcastle have to remain level-headed.

They’ve been here before. It’s time to use that experience.
