Alexander Isak was the difference maker during Newcastle United’s game against Chelsea

Sadly, Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever was a difference maker for all the wrong reasons as the Magpies lost 2-1 to Chelsea.

Alexander Isak did end his drought in front of goal, with the 25-year-old netting a first half equaliser at Stamford Bridge. It was a tap in from the Newcastle United striker, who now has two goals to his name this season. It was the type of goal you wanted Isak to score, after seeing him struggle against Brighton last weekend.

It was a big moment from Isak, who would go on to be involved in two more major incidents against the Blues.

First, he gave the ball away cheaply on the halfway line, allowing Cole Palmer to maraud forward and score what proved to be the winner for Chelsea.

Secondly, a moment of selfishness saw Isak waste Newcastle United’s biggest chance to grab a point.

Alexander Isak wasted Newcastle’s chance to equalise against Chelsea

As Newcastle went in search of an equaliser, Isak got the chance he was hoping for. A little nudge on the Chelsea defender allowed him to race through on goal and go beyond Robert Sanchez. However, he was forced so far wide that he could not shoot.

Isak was then able to drive towards goal, with Joelinton in space for a tap in.

However, Isak ignored him and went himself. He skipped past Levi Colwill, only for Moises Caicedo to challenge him and clear the danger.

It was an appalling miss, and it proved to be costly.

Alexander Isak did not apologise to Newcastle teammates

That second half moment gets worse every time you see it. Joelinton was in the perfect position to score, yet Isak opted not to pass to him. It was reminiscent of Fabian Schar doing the same to Isak away to Fulham earlier in the season.

There are no excuses for Isak’s decision, and the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has noted on X that the forward did not even apologise to his teammates after his costly error.

Edwards wrote on X: “This will be enduring image of the game and the defeat. Isak has been brilliant for Newcastle but he’s been really bad this season. It’s time to start asking questions about his focus. This was a player thinking only of himself, not the team. He didn’t even apologise to teammates after doing it either.”

Isak decisions make tough week even harder for Newcastle

Newcastle lost to Chelsea, and a big portion of the blame rests on the shoulders of Alexander Isak.

The Magpies have kicked off a very difficult week with a defeat, and it could make the next two games even harder.

Next up for Newcastle is another game against Chelsea, as Enzo Maresca’s side travel to St James’ Park for a Carabao Cup tie on Wednesday night.

After that, Newcastle United are at home to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.
