Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Mark Gillespie for his stunning debut against Blackburn.
More specifically, the Toon Army on Twitter have pinpointed one thing in particular that they loved about his performance.
The 28-year-old – who left us as a 16-year-old – made his first appearance for the Magpies in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup win, drawing praise from Steve Bruce for his fine display.
The ex-Motherwell glovesman managed to keep a clean sheet, but supporters were left delighted with his distribution and efficient use of the ball against Rovers.
It is something that neither Martin Dubravka or Karl Darlow excel at. However, Gillespie looked very comfortable in possession.
According to WhoScored, our new shot-stopper completed 10 accurate long balls and made 35 passes in total against the Championship outfit. The Tyneside-born goalkeeper also had 50 touches of the ball, which was more than Sean Longstaff and Miguel Almiron managed individually.
It now means that Bruce has a bit of a selection headache. We welcome Brighton to St James’ Park on Sunday, and the Magpies boss must decide whether to stick with Darlow, or reward our summer signing for his excellent debut.
Let’s see what the Toon Army have been saying about Gillespie’s distribution…
Newcastle fans on Twitter rave about Mark Gillespie’s distribution
Not all negative from last night. Yes the game was poor, but we won without 8 first teamers (at least) starting. Fraser got mins & Miggy looked very good in flashes. Great goal & assist for the pair too. But Gillespie’s kicking looked the best I’ve seen in a while for an NUFC GK.

Very impressed with Gillespie’s distribution tonight. Something that the other two GK’s lack #NUFC

Only good thing about this game other than Frazer’s goal is Gillespie’s distribution for a keeper seems fairly good 🤷♂️

Mark Gillespie has had a very good debut. His distribution looks fantastic. Be interesting to see who takes the number one in a few years between him and Woodman #NUFC
