Tim Howard was not happy with 22-year-old Newcastle player vs Chelsea

Anthony Gordon needs to be more ‘switched on’ to thrive at the highest level for Newcastle United.

That is the view of pundit Tim Howard, who was critical of Gordon at half time during the Magpies’ Premier League Summer Series clash with Chelsea.

The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, starting the game on the left of attack. He also had a spell as an out-and-out striker in the second half, which is something he did brilliantly for England at the Under-21 European Championship.

Gordon is looking sharp ahead of the new season, but was up against one of the Premier League’s best on Wednesday night in Reece James. He is an extremely talented right-back, with better players than Gordon struggling up against the England international.

But we saw some moments of magic from the former Everton man, who is hoping to enjoy a breakout year in a black and white shirt.

Fans are eager to see what he can do, but ex-goalkeeper Howards believes he needs to offer more.

Tim Howard’s verdict on Gordon in the first half

Howard was on punditry duty for NBC Sports, and was asked about the winger fading after a bright start to the game.

“I think that’s a young player,” he said.

“If you look at a seasoned veteran, they know that every time they get on the ball they’ve got to be sharp.

“Young players do it once, feel good about themselves, take the play off.

“No disrespect to him. But as Anthony Gordon starts to learn, he’ll start to realise ‘I’ve got to be switched on every single play to make sure that I contribute’.”

Gordon did contribute vs Chelsea

The ironic thing is that Gordon actually did contribute in the first half. Without him, Newcastle would not have drawn 1-1 with Chelsea out in Atlanta.

He was the creator in the opening 45 minutes, and produced a wonderful assist for Miguel Almiron, who scored at the stadium he used to call home.

It was a wonderful moment and an excellent finish from Miggy, who now has two goals this summer. He will take all the plaudits, but so much credit has to go to Gordon for the pass.

The January signing was brave in possession, drifting inside at top speed before producing a defence-splitting pass.

While Gordon does need to find consistency, the criticism from Howard seemed harsh – especially after it came just moments after the best pass of the night.
