Eddie Howe got the better of Thomas Frank, as Newcastle United beat Brentford on Wednesday night.

It was a commanding performance from the Magpies, as Newcastle beat Brentford 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Thomas Frank thinks Newcastle can win the Carabao Cup, after seeing his side exit the competition at the quarter-final stage.

This game was completely different to when Newcastle United faced Brentford earlier this month. On that day at the Gtech Community Stadium, Newcastle were shambolic against Brentford. But on this occasion, Howe’s side were utterly dominant.

It was a comfortable win for the Magpies, as Eddie Howe waits for the Carabao Cup semi-final draw.

Thomas Frank says Newcastle had ‘nothing’ in the first half

Despite Newcastle controlling most of the game against Brentford, their manager has made a rather shocking observation.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live after the game, Frank stated that Newcastle had ‘nothing’ in the first half other than Sandro Tonali’s two goals.

“It sounds a bit crazy maybe but beside the two goals in the first half they had nothing,” he said.

“In these cup games you need to try to stay in the tie and hopefully be better in the second half, but we gave two bad goals away and then the third one too.

“Our goal for 3-1 was a beautiful goal, so now imagine if it was only 2-1. The pressure builds in the last four or five minutes and you never know what can happen. That is the irritating part but it is what it is.”

Newcastle United were dominant against Brentford

Frank knows what he is saying is ‘crazy’, and that is because it probably is.

The Magpies scored early, as Tonali showed appreciation to the Newcastle fans after his ninth minute goal. He then added a second in the final few minutes of the half, as he got on the end of Anthony Gordon’s corner.

But they were not Newcastle’s only opportunities in the opening 45 minutes.

Gordon had a great chance to score after getting in behind, while Jacob Murphy struck the post after some beautiful link-up play between Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

While Newcastle only started to pepper the Brentford goal in the second half, to say that Eddie Howe’s side had ‘nothing’ in the first half is preposterous.

It is a strange comment from Frank, whose side continue to struggle away from home. That was to Newcastle’s benefit, as the quest for silverware goes on.
