The simple message Jason Tindall was screaming at Newcastle United players during statement win over Chelsea

Newcastle United got over the line on Sunday, eventually claiming a 2-0 win over Chelsea to take a major step towards Champions League qualification.

Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes scored the goals as Newcastle United moved third in the Premier League, putting themselves on course for a return to the Champions League

Three more points would do it as Newcastle start to look up the Premier League table rather than down it. A second-placed finish feels possible for Eddie Howe, particularly if his side beat Arsenal on Sunday.

Tonali struck early against the Blues, while Guimaraes settled any nerves with a deflected strike from range just before the full-time whistle. Still, between those goals, Chelsea started to get back into the game despite Nicolas Jackson’s red card.

Howe’s side dominated most of the first half but did appear to sit back in the second. Nick Pope made two brilliant saves against Chelsea and the story could have been very different without him.

All of that makes a simple but important message from Jason Tindall on the touchline all the more interesting.

What Jason Tindall was saying to the Newcastle United players against Chelsea

The Newcastle United assistant manager was back on the touchline after serving a one-match ban against Brighton last week, having amassed three yellow cards this season.

As noted by Chris Waugh of The Athletic on social media platform X, Tindall was urging the Newcastle players to calm down and “take your time” in the second half.

Chelsea had started to threaten. It was natural that Newcastle’s intensity would dip somewhat after such a fast start in the baking heat on Tyneside, but the Blues did look much better for long periods of the second half.

Thankfully, the players appeared to get that message.

Enzo Maresca’s strange claim about Newcastle United after Chelsea defeat

Nicolas Jackson was sent off for Chelsea against Newcastle after VAR deemed his forearm-first challenge on Sven Botman was “a serious foul play offence”.

While it’s true the Blues did go close a few times even when going down to ten men, it’d be difficult to seriously claim they deserved all three points.

Still, Enzo Maresca thinks St James’ Park played a role in Jackson’s red card against Newcastle.

“If the referee decides a red card it’s a red card but in some different decisions in this stadium sometimes it’s the noise decides if it’s a foul or not,” he said.

That feels a pretty strange thing to say. No matter the ground in which it happened, connecting with a player with your forearm having appeared to glance at him first gives both the referee and VAR little choice but to act.
