‘The best’: Matt Targett hails £100k-a-week Newcastle star for what he did against Palace last night

Newcastle United left-back Matt Targett has praised goalkeeper Nick Pope for his emphatic display during the Magpies’ penalty shootout against Crystal Palace last night.

The 30-year-old celebrated saving three spot-kicks by taking to Instagram, after the Tyneside club progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup thanks to his efforts.

In response to the post, Targett took to the comments to hail the Toon no.1 (actually the no.22). Alongside two praising emojis, he labelled Pope: “The best”.

Having signed for Newcastle this summer in a deal worth £10m, the England international has truly earned his £100,000-a-week salary at St James’ Park.

In a major contrast to this time last season, the Magpies sit third in the Premier League table. Under Eddie Howe’s analytical eye, the side are hoping to challenge for a top-four finish at the end of the season. This would see the Toon well on their way to achieving Public Investment Fund’s ambitions with the club, which involve winning silverware.

The Tyneside outfit have the joint-best defensive record in the league, having conceded just 11 goals all season.

Pope’s incredible shot-stopping ability has only improved since signing for Newcastle, with the keeper renowned for his lightning-fast reactions and last-ditch saves.

With the World Cup just around the corner, the former Burnley man will be hoping to lead the line out for England in a few weeks time.

However, regardless of whether he gets minutes or not, everyone knows Pope has shown he is truly capable of performing at the highest level.
