Newcastle United have put their name in the hat for the FA Cup fifth round after a win against Birmingham City.
Eddie Howe will breathe a sigh of relief after his Newcastle United side went behind after just a minute. But Joe Willock was the hero on the night after picking up two goals including the winner to ensure the Magpies went through to the next round.
Callum Wilson made his first start for Newcastle since April 2024, but it looked like he had never been away. The 32-year-old scored his 49th Newcastle goal and had a hand in their first goal of the evening.
Newcastle’s win against Birmingham continues the momentum from the Carabao Cup win against Arsenal in midweek. Howe will be pleased with the fight that his side showed especially after so many changes were made. The likes of Sven Botman were absent through injury – Howe was also without Joelinton who has a knee problem.
With Newcastle confirmed to be in the next round, Matthew Upson pointed out one moment during the game where Newcastle could have felt hard done by.

Birmingham man should have seen red against Newcastle
The game was incredibly entertaining and full of drama, injuries and fierce tackles. There were six yellow cards brandished between the two sides but there could have easily been red cards shown throughout the tie.
18-year-old Lewis Miley went in on Birmingham midfielder Marc Leonard which forced him to be stretchered off. Replays showed that Miley was lucky not to see red.
Shortly after that, replays showed Blues defender Ben Davies lunge into a challenge on William Osula, who bagged two assists on the night.
BBC Commentator Matthew Upson believed that Davies should have seen red for the challenge.
“Ben Davies is lucky,” he said on the BBC live feed.
“He’s gotten away with one there.”
His comments were backed up by former Birmingham defender Curtis Davies who said that the tackle “could have been a red card on its own.”
There were many incidents throughout the game that showed how much of a feisty cup tie it was.
Newcastle dealt fresh injury blow
While Newcastle can celebrate a win and their advancement to the next round. There was some concern from the Magpies camp after defender Dan Burn went off with a groin problem.
Burn had struggled to keep up with the pace of the defenders throughout the game before being taken off for Fabian Schar 10 minutes into the second half. Post-match, Howe confirmed that Burn’s substitution was not tactical and that it was a precaution after he felt something in his groin.
It is a cause for concern for Howe who could be without a fit left-sided centre-back just a few weeks out from the Carabao Cup final.
Schar came on and managed to control the game in Burn’s absence. Newcastle would have usually looked to Lloyd Kelly in a situation like this, but his move to Juventus has left Howe down to the bare bones.
