Newcastle United face Bournemouth in the Premier League, and it has been announced that Stuart Attwell will be the referee.

He is set to officiate his third Toon game of the season, as the Magpies look to improve on last weekend’s showing against West Ham.

Eddie Howe is taking on his former club, and returns to the Vitality Stadium for the first time since he left the Cherries in 2020.

It is set to be an emotional evening for the Toon boss, but his main priority will be putting another three points on the board. That will be Newcastle’s one and only aim, as they battle with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle will have to be at their best to beat a Bournemouth side that is battling against relegation, while Toon fans will hope that the referee has a better game than the last time he took charge of a Newcastle fixture.

Stuart Attwell was referee for Newcastle’s cup first leg vs Southampton

Stuart Attwell has refereed Newcastle twice so far this season, with both games coming away to Southampton.

The first was a 4-1 win in the Premier League, where the Magpies dominated the Saints. However, there was a lot more riding on the second fixture.

It was the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi final last month, and Attwell was the man in the middle. He would have been hoping to stay out of the action, but was involved in one of the game’s biggest flashpoints.

Newcastle did find the net in the first half, with Joelinton scoring from close range – or so he thought.

Despite there appearing to be no infringement, Attwell ruled the goal out for handball by the Brazilian, meaning that the scoreline remained at 0-0.

VAR looked at the incident but were unable to determine that the referee had made an area, as the footage was massively inconclusive…so inconclusive that you wonder how on earth Attwell ruled the goal out in the first place.

It was a poor decision, but luckily not one that cost the Magpies. Joelinton eventually scored a legitimate goal, and Newcastle have since booked their place in the final against Manchester United.

But Saturday’s focus is the Premier League, and Newcastle will pray Attwell doesn’t make another error like he did last time.
