It looked like it was going to be a stunning victory for Rafa Benitez’s men, who started the day in the relegation zone alongside Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town.
And they ended the day with a loss as well, blowing their two-goal lead late in the game.
Juan Mata grabbed one back for Man United with 20 minutes left to play and suddenly the home side believed.
