Newcastle United finally beat Manchester City.
While the 1-0 win at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening secured a spot in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, it also lifted a mental block.
Eddie Howe had never previously beaten City during his managerial career, while it was the first time Newcastle had emerged as victors over them since 2019.

Alexander Isak’s goal was enough to win it, though at one point, that looked remarkably unlikely.
Newcastle compete stunning turnaround against Man City
Isak’s goal was the icing on the cake after quite a turnaround at half-time.
After City had dominated for pretty much the entirety of the first-half, the interval – coupled with the introduction of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon – sparked something for the Toon Army.
They were far more adventurous, winning the ball back in higher areas and duly causing all manner of problems.
Frankly, it looked like a different team to have emerged from the tunnel.
In fact, such was the manner of the turnaround, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes he’s rarely ever seen anything like it.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger turn around, from a team that was so passive to the polar opposite,” he said (via the Sky Sports LIVE blog at 21.14).

The kind of performance we’ve been waiting for
Newcastle, until Sunday against Sheffield United at least, hadn’t really got going this season until Wednesday night.
Though the draw with AC Milan represented a strong start to the Champions League campaign, this result was something different.
After the break, they proactively took the game to City who, despite making a lot of changes, still had a raft of top quality players on show.
This is something to build on. Play with that kind of intensity at home to Paris Saint-Germain next week and surely anything can happen.
