It was hard work, but what a win for Newcastle United.
Despite ending the game with nine men, the Magpies were able cling on and pick up a vital three points.
The first half saw Newcastle look threatening every time they attacked, while the second half saw backs to the wall defending.

A red card to Jeff Hendrick and an injury to Fabian Schar saw Newcastle go down to nine men, allowing Southampton to pile on the pressure.
But Steve Bruce’s side defended magnificently to hold on for a huge victory.
Shearer picks out three Newcastle heroes
There were incredible performances all over the pitch for Newcastle, all for completely different reasons.
At times we saw wonderful creativity, while at the end it was bodies on the line.
Alan Shearer reacted to the victory on Twitter, praising three players in black and white.
It’s hard to argue with Shearer. Miguel Almiron, Joe Willock and Isaac Hayden were all incredible.
Out of the three, Almiron probably deserves the man of the match award.
His goal turned out to be the winner, while his defensive work was key to grinding out the win.
Willock deserves a lot of plaudits too, proving already what a wonderful signing he is going to be.

Shearer also praised Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse, whose free kick was probably the best goal of the game.
Fortunately for us, it wasn’t enough to inspire a Saints comeback.
