Newcastle face a tough task when Liverpool descend upon St James’ Park on Saturday and David Seaman isn’t confident about Newcastle’s chances.
While Seaman was very complimentary about Newcastle on his Seaman Says Podcast, he did say that he predicts that Liverpool will be “too much” for Newcastle.
No home advantage for the Magpies
The Arsenal legend said: “I feel Liverpool will have too much for them. I think Liverpool will enjoy going there. The pressure is more on Newcastle to win.”
The pressure is on both sides, really. Both are desperate for a win for different reasons. Liverpool are massively underperforming – sitting ninth in the league with their form being spotty at best. Meanwhile, Newcastle haven’t tasted league defeat since they were robbed at Anfield in August, but are on a run of three league games without a win.
While I get what Seaman is saying, I don’t think there’s an expectation on Newcastle to win, especially given our record against the Reds. I imagine that most Newcastle fans would be more than happy with a draw in this fixture and that, realistically, Liverpool need the points more than we do given our comparative league positions.
It’s not all negative
Away from the actual game, Seaman was asked if he can see the comparison with Newcastle’s rise under the new regime to that of Liverpool’s under Klopp: “With Newcastle you can see that it’s going to happen because of the backing that they’ve got, with the players that they will have the capability to buy”
He then went on to suggest that Newcastle could emulate the growth that Chelsea and Manchester City have shown: “The Newcastle thing, for me, looking at that is going to get bigger and better and I’m looking forward to watching that. Seeing if it develop into a Chelsea situation or a Man City situation where they get loads of money put into it and it just gets better and better.”
