Paul Merson now predicts who will win on Sunday – West Ham or Newcastle

Newcastle United travel to London to face West Ham on Sunday with both teams coming off the back of European wins this week.

Newcastle‘s 4-1 win over PSG was a tad more impressive than a 2-1 win over Freiburg I must say, but still, both results should be feeding confidence to the respective sides.

West Ham played last night so they have a day less to prepare for Sunday’s clash which could be a very useful advantage for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe will be hoping Joelinton and Callum Wilson will return

Eddie Howe still has an horrific injury list for this point of the season but Callum Wilson and Joelinton were close to making a return to the side on Wednesday and as such could feature on Sunday which will definitely help.

West Ham are having a great start to their season given how much they’ve struggled lately, and Newcastle target Jarrod Bowen has once again been a key man for them along with Bruno Guimaraes‘ best mate, Lucas Paqueta.

It won’t be easy for Newcastle and that’s a sentiment echoed by Paul Merson in his prediction, although he does expect Newcastle to emerge victorious.

Writing for Sportskeeda, Merson said: “Newcastle pull off an amazing result in the Champions League. They played it their way, put PSG under severe pressure, and got the crowd excited. I was scared they’d be overwhelmed by the occasions and play it like a European game. The tempo was unbelievable, and what we saw showed us that the Premier League is the best league in the world.

Merson expects Newcastle will get the job done against West Ham

“West Ham aren’t going to make it very easy, but Newcastle do have an extra day to prepare and that will make a big difference. They need a big result to follow up on their victory against PSG. This is their bread and butter. They’ve got to get back into the top four, and I think they’ll win this game.

It’s certainly going to be a very different game than the one on Wednesday night, but that energy will still be coursing through the Newcastle players’ veins and that will push them on to another Premier League victory.
