Bruno Guimaraes has now delivered a message to the fans after he received a red card during Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup semi final win over Southampton.

It was an almost perfect night for the Magpies thanks to Sean Longstaff, but the Bruno’s early exit set up a tense ending at St James’ Park.

The Brazilian was initially given a yellow card for a foul on Saints winger Samuel Edozie, but then it became clear that a VAR check was happening to see if it should have been a red.

Referee Paul Tierney marched over to the screen and, after a closer inspection, decided to upgrade the yellow card to a red one.

The 25-year-old was distraught, but a closer look at the foul showed that it was a really dangerous challenge. The only defence Bruno could have was that there was no intent, and it was merely a product of Edozie being so quick.

But there could be no major complaints, and now Bruno will miss the Magpies’ next three games. That is a serious blow, but he will be back for the Carabao Cup final on February 26th.

Bruno Guimaraes’ message to Newcastle fans after red card

After the game, Bruno posted a message to his official Instagram account.

He wrote: “Huge happiness to be in my first final with this shirt. Every day I’m more sure I made the best decision coming here. First year and first final. Sad for the expulsion, the first in my career, but these are situations that occur during games. Thanks for the support. Wembley, here we go.”

Obviously the red card was a blow, but Bruno could not hide his delight at his side reaching the League Cup final. It comes just over a year after he decided to join the club, back when we looked like relegation certainties.

Now Bruno is heading to Wembley, and he has a few weeks to prepare. The £35million man will not play again until the final, which looks likely to be against Manchester United – unless Nottingham Forest pull off a miracle.

The midfielder’s message prompted a reply from Nick Pope. The goalkeeper wrote: “Never change my brother.”

An unfortunate incident but the correct decision

It was really unfortunate that Bruno got sent off, but there was no malice – it was merely a mistimed tackle that sadly had serious repercussions.

It did feel like Bruno was going to be involved in a major incident last night. The more the game went on, the more he was starting to clash with James Ward-Prowse. They had a real battle in the middle of the park.

Bruno overstepped the line with his tackle, and it now means that he will miss the next three games.

But he has an edge to his game that makes him a complete midfielder, and Pope never wants to see that go.

Now Bruno is suspended for three games, and the next time we will see him play in a black and white shirt will be when he walks out at Wembley for the 2023 Carabao Cup final.
