Newcastle’s embarrassing goalless run against Brighton must end today

Today is the fifth time Newcastle United have faced Brighton in the Premier League, and they will be looking to end two horrific runs.

Firstly, the Magpies are yet to beat Brighton in the top flight. Whether it’s home or away, Newcastle are yet to secure three points against the Seagulls in the Premier League.

If Newcastle are going to put an end to this rotten run today, they’ll need to make another piece of history. That’s because we’ve never scored a goal in the top flight in a home game against Brighton.

Whether it was under Rafa Benitez or Steve Bruce, we’ve never found the net at St James’ Park when facing Brighton since we both won promotion in 2017.

Newcastle vs Brighton has been a woeful fixture for the Toon

We’ve played Brighton four times in the Premier League at St James’ Park so far, and amassed just two points. Benitez won one, and so did Bruce.

The games managed by Benitez were real snooze fests, and the Brucey outings weren’t much better.

Bruce’s first home game against Brighton was dominated by the return of Andy Carroll. The local lad came back a hero, but was unable to break the deadlock in a drab 0-0 draw.

The same fixture the following season was a disaster. In front of absolutely no one, the Magpies were spanked 3-0 by Graham Potter’s side. Bruce’s team were completely played off the park.

To not score in four home games in a row against Brighton is a bit embarrassing. That record needs to end today, especially if we want to put another three points on the board.

This will be Howe’s first Toon game against Brighton, and a chance to do what Benitez and Bruce couldn’t.
