Sandro Tonali could play for Newcastle against Sunderland, having avoided a serious injury when coming off against Barcelona on Wednesday night.

Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth are all injured.

Sunderland, meanwhile, could welcome back all of Robin Roefs, Nordi Mukiele, Dan Ballard and Enzo Le Fee following recent injuries.

Nilson Angulo, Bertrand Traore, Romaine Mudle and Jocelin Ta Bi are likely to be injured.

It will pain any Newcastle fan to bet against them in a derby but given the consistent struggles the Magpies have endured in this fixture, it’s difficult not to.

Still, at some point the hoodoo has to end. Newcastle United need to win, while Sunderland have won only three away games all season.

For that reason, a much-needed Newcastle win does not feel out of the question.
