Newcastle United’s disgraceful record runs deeper than losing to Sunderland, it’s unacceptable

Newcastle United got it all wrong against Sunderland on Sunday, as their unwanted record got even worse.

The Magpies are now without a win in their last 10 Tyne-Wear derbies in the Premier League, but it is not that record that should concern Eddie Howe the most.

Newcastle United’s loss to Sunderland was crushing, but it felt inevitable as soon as Nick Woltemade put through his own net. From that moment, it was hard to envisage a comeback.

For this Newcastle United squad, ‘comeback’ no longer appears to be a word that is in their vocabulary.

Thoughts on this Eddie Howe comment, Toon fans?

He's got some nerve saying we were good off the ball, we never even put a tackle in! 😡

Newcastle United have not come from behind in the Premier League all season

Throughout his tenure as Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has built a side that are resilient and never give up.

Those qualities seem to have disappeared, with the Magpies failing to come from behind in any of their games this season.

They have gone behind six times in the Premier League, losing all six of those games. The only times they have scored when losing were against Liverpool and Brighton, two games which they still went on to lose.

The Magpies have also scored twice from losing positions in the Champions League. Anthony Gordon netted a consolation goal against Barcelona, while they did turn the game around against Bayer Leverkusen after conceding first. However, they would go on to draw 2-2 after conceding late at the BayArena.

In the past, Howe’s side never knew when they were beaten. Now it feels like they are beaten as soon as they go a goal down.

Newcastle were awful against Sunderland and to play like that in a derby is disgraceful, but this long-running record should concern Eddie Howe even more. The spirit seems to have gone, and it is unclear how or if it can return.

The last time Newcastle United got a result coming from behind

The last time Newcastle United came from behind to pick up at least a point was May 2025.

The Magpies were 1-0 down to Brighton at the Amex Stadium, with an Alexander Isak penalty in the 89th minute salvaging a draw.

The last time Newcastle came from behind to win was against Nottingham Forest in February 2025. Having conceded in the sixth minute to a Callum Hudson-Odoi goal, Howe’s side would go on to win 4-3.

Newcastle’s depleting mentality was on display that day, as they had gone 4-1 up and almost threw away victory.
