Newcastle United will start the defence of their Carabao Cup trophy with a third-round clash against Bradford City on Wednesday night.

Last season, of course, Newcastle United won the 2024-25 Carabao Cup to end a 70-year wait for a major domestic honour.

Eddie Howe’s side were brilliant in the final against Liverpool and while that day will live long in the memory for generations of supporters, the club are no doubt keen to build on that.

Newcastle need a win here, there’s little doubt about that. While the start to the season hasn’t exactly been a disaster, an early exit as Carabao Cup holders would be hugely disappointing.

The Bantams, meanwhile, sit top of League One after winning six of their opening nine games.

With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about the game.

Newcastle United vs Bradford prediction

It’s difficult to know what kind of team to expect from Newcastle, given Howe’s rotation policy.

However, at home, whatever team he puts out should surely have enough. That’s not to downplay Bradford’s quality of course but Newcastle have to be favourites at St James’.

Goals may be a problem but it would be a surprise not to see them find one here.

Prediction: Newcastle United 2-0 Bradford City.
