Newcastle United’s away day misery continued on Boxing Day with a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United.
Patrick Dorgu’s brilliant volley in the first half saw the Red Devils take the lead and Newcastle could never recover.
Eddie Howe’s side saw a lot of the ball but, in all honesty, it was another insipid away performance. They remain with just one win on the road all season.
Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players….
Who was Newcastle United’s WORST player against Manchester United?
Aaron Ramsdale – 5
Should have done better for Dorgu’s volley and his distribution wasn’t all that impressive.
With Nick Pope on the bench, the time may be up for Ramsdale.
Lewis Miley – 6
Found it difficult against Matheus Cunha. Wasn’t dreadful by any means but was beaten a few times.
Important to remember that Miley is a teenage midfielder playing at right back….

Malick Thiaw – 6
Did reasonably well to keep Newcastle able to sustain attacks by winning his duels but Thiaw wasn’t at his best on the ball.
Fabian Schar – 6
Has really got to stop trying the spectacular. On the odd occasion, it comes off for Schar, but not often enough to keep trying it.
Lewis Hall – 8
Newcastle United’s best performer on the day. Hall didn’t always have it easy against Dorgu but drove Newcastle forward and was unlucky to have hit the bar with a fine effort.
Bruno Guimaraes – 6
Some nice and sharp passing at times to try and get around the deep defensive block but Guimaraes was far from his best.
Sandro Tonali – 5
Tonali‘s funk continued. Can’t knock his effort but the quality just isn’t there right now. Corners should be so much better.
Jacob Ramsey – 5
Actually started somewhat brightly but faded. Felt like a couple of steps back for Ramsey.
Jacob Murphy – 5
Put one brilliant ball into the box but was otherwise anonymous. Murphy just isn’t looking like the same player from last season.
Well, that wasn’t very Christmassy 😡 Should Aaron Ramsdale have done better here?!
Clearance from Nick Woltemade wasn't great either…
Nick Woltemade – 4
Too deep to get the ball in any meaningful area most of the time. Too weak on the rare chance he was afforded it.
Followed up his best game for Newcastle last time out with one of his worst here. Woltemade has to do better.
Anthony Gordon – 5
Energetic but nowhere near as good as he was against Chelsea. Gordon‘s strange season continues and, if he really were a top player, he’d be able to string performances together.
Final ball was off all night.
Subs:
Yoane Wissa – 5
Harvey Barnes – 6
Joelinton – 5
Joe Willock – 5
