Newcastle United fell to a late defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
Nick Woltemade had given Newcastle United the lead at St James’ Park but goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel ensured the Gunners left with all three points.
The game was also marred by a serious-looking injury to Tino Livramento, who was stretchered off after a challenge from William Saliba.
Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players…

Nick Pope – 8
Some excellent saves throughout. Could have done little for the first goal but may have done better for the second.
A harsh ending for Pope, who kept Newcastle in it for most of the game.
Jacob Murphy – 6
Poor back pass almost got Newcastle into some very deep trouble. Important to remember he’s not fully fit but gave Newcastle a nice out-ball when Arsenal were building up a head of steam.
Malick Thiaw – 8
Absolutely excellent. Arguably brought in as a back-up option, Thiaw is proving a brilliant signing this summer.
Fantastic on the ball and a resolute defender, he’s looking like a nailed-on starter now.
Sven Botman – 8
Howe was confident Botman was getting back to his best after so many injury issues of late and this was certainly another sign of it.
Botman is starting to look undroppable again.
Dan Burn – 7
Not quite as good as his two central defensive partners on the day but a decent enough showing.
Tino Livramento – 6
Heartbreaking for Livramento, who was stretchered off with what looked a serious injury. Wasn’t his best display until that point but that matters little now.
Hopefully, some good news emerges.
Sandro Tonali – 7
The best of the midfield three on a tough day. Recorded the assist for Woltemade with a fine cross, although even the Italian was not at his absolute best.
Bruno Guimaraes – 6
Not the Brazilian’s best display, it has to be said. While he wasn’t dreadful by any means, the kind of performance Newcastle fans have been used to in big games on Tyneside over the years wasn’t really there.
Joelinton – 6
Grew into the game and helped Newcastle battle against wave after wave of Arsenal attack until the goal.
Jacob Ramsey will be putting pressure on the Brazilian by the time he returns from injury.
Anthony Gordon – 6
A willing runner and the industry that was missing last season appears to be back. Not brilliant on the ball but certainly an encouraging outing.
At some point, however, he needs to kick on.
Nick Woltemade – 8
Scored a brilliant header and delivered some fine touches throughout. Another hugely promising display from Newcastle United’s club record signing.
Another statement performance.
