Newcastle United first-half player ratings vs Barcelona as Anthony Elanga makes statement

Eddie Howe made a big call by starting Anthony Gordon up front for Newcastle United against Barcelona in the Champions League on Thursday night.

Newcastle United started very well against the Spanish champions and head into the half-time break at 0-0.

It was a slight surprise to see Woltemade not start but the speed with which Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga operate has been causing Barca’s issues.

Elanga got the nod ahead of Jacob Murphy and that relatively surprising selection call has so far worked.

The Sweden international hasn’t always looked at home in a Newcastle shirt but this has so far been something of a statement performance from him.

With that in mind, here’s a look at our first-half player ratings.

Nick Pope – 6

In truth, the goalkeeper hasn’t had much amount to do.

Kieran Trippier – 7

Has so far won his battle with Marcus Rashford in impressive fashion. Corners, however, could be improved upon.

Fabian Schar – 6

Has not been called upon a huge amount. Good block on a Robert Lewandowski shot.

Dan Burn – 6

Like Schar, he’s not had that much to do but has been reliable when called upon. Booked.

Tino Livramento – 7

Has done very well to keep Raphinha relatively quiet thus far.

Sandro Tonali – 7

Composed as ever, with Newcastle’s midfield largely stopping Barcelona from building many attacks.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Another fine performance from the Brazilian, who has set Elanga up with some brilliant balls thus far.

Joelinton – 6

Typically industrious and not giving Barca’s midfielders much time to think on the ball. Needs to be better on the ball at times.

Anthony Elanga – 7

His best performance for Newcastle United yet. Laid on brilliant chances for both Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes.

Anthony Gordon – 6

A willing runner and you can perhaps see why Howe opted to start him given Barca’s high line but the striker experiment is yet to really work for Gordon. Should have at least connected to Elanga’s cross.

Harvey Barnes – 6

Should perhaps have done better with Elanga’s cross but a decent enough showing thus far from a player who has struggled up until now this season.
