Another game, another defeat for Newcastle United.
But if you saw Steve Bruce after the final whistle, you’d think he’d been on the winning side.
As his players trudged off after a 3-1 loss, Bruce was seen chuckling away as if ole Gunnar Solskjaer had just delivered the punchline to a cracking knock-knock joke.
But the punchline for Bruce is the fact that his side are still just three points clear of the relegation zone.
Fulham have once again closed the gap this week, picking up a vital win against Sheffield United.
Scott Parker’s side look full of confidence and fight, while the Magpies look like a side destined to go down.
Just like in 2016, Newcastle are sleepwalking towards another relegation.
The reality for Bruce is that his side have won just two of their last 16 games. Only Sheffield United and West Brom have lost more games than Newcastle this season.
The majority of fans want Bruce to leave. Before the arrival of Graeme Jones, the football was absolutely wretched.
Things have improved slightly but it is still miles away from being good enough.
Newcastle played well against Manchester United for 45 minutes. But as soon as the home side took the lead for the second time, you just knew it was game over.
Bruce’s side barely came close to getting back into the game.
The threat of relegation looms larger every week. Yet still Bruce remains in the job.
Most fans have had enough, and the fact that Bruce can have a laugh and a joke with his opposite number moments after another defeat speaks volumes.
Newcastle fans are furious, and rightly so.
