Newcastle should look to avoid Ben Godfrey this summer after another poor display for Everton

Reported Newcastle United target Ben Godfrey again struggled for Everton last night, as the Toffees lost their crucial game against Burnley.

The centre-half started for the Toffees at Turf Moor. And he would go on to make a big error on the Clarets’ late winner in the 3-2 result.

With the game tied at 2-2, Charlie Taylor put in a cross for the home side. It should have just been a routine clearance from Godfrey.

Instead, he somehow played it off his own leg and it fell to Matej Vydra.

Vydra then crossed for Maxwel Cornet to slam home. Godfrey also might have cut out that ball from Vydra.

And on Burnley’s second goal, Godfrey didn’t cover himself in any glory, tamely sticking out a leg as Taylor fired in a cross for Jay Rodriguez.

Godfrey’s display was slammed by fans, and the Liverpool Echo gave him a measly 4/10. They said of him: “He had to become a real leader at the back for Everton in this match and he did it very well for the most part.

“However, what people are going to remember is his awful mistake in the lead up to the deciding goal of the match. His positioning for the second goal of the game didn’t cover himself in glory either.”

Newcastle have supposedly been tracking Godfrey ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Mirror reported last month that Eddie Howe is a big fan of the 24-year-old.

Since those reports, Godfrey has done little to show he would be worthy of a pursuit by Newcastle this summer.

Ben Godfrey might be playing his way off Newcastle’s radar

Godfrey enjoyed a really good season in 2020/21 under Carlo Ancelotti.

But this term, the £25 million player has seemed a shadow of his former self. In recent weeks he has really struggled.

Howe supposedly rates him highly. But it’s difficult to see how the Toon boss would want to move for him this summer unless there’s a major turnaround in the next few weeks.

One gets the feeling that there are many better options out there.
