Newcastle United recorded a morale-boosting victory over Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday night, with Anthony Gordon scoring the only goal of the game.
Gordon‘s goal gave Newcastle United the lead after a smart run from the impressive Joe Willock.
The Blues huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a way through and a disciplined Newcastle were worthy winners despite giving up much of the ball.
Who was Newcastle’s best player vs Chelsea and why?
Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players.
Aaron Ramsdale – 7
Didn’t have all that much to do but produced two good saves to deny Cole Palmer and Liam Delap.
Tino Livramento – 7
Not always brilliant going forward but his first start in a while and showed little sign of ring rust. Excellent ball in the build-up to the goal.
Malick Thiaw – 8
Excellent display in the heart of defence and hasn’t let what happened against Barcelona have an impact on him.
Sven Botman – 8
Rock solid defensively.
Lewis Hall – 8
Showing his former club up here. Brilliant against Barcelona and fantastic again at Stamford Bridge.
Hall is genuinely one of the best defenders in the world right now.

Joe Willock – 8
Not many would have expected Willock to still be in the starting lineup this deep into the PIF era but he did very well to set up Gordon’s goal and has done his part defensively too.
Was a driving force at times in the second, too. A statement performance from a player largely written off at times.
Willock may not be the biggest name but he proved he shouldn’t be disregarded just yet.
Jacob Ramsey – 7
Another impressive showing. Perhaps not quite as good as he was against Barcelona earlier this week but Ramsey is building up a head of steam in his Newcastle career.
Has taken him a while to settle but those early struggles look like a thing of the past now.
Jacob Murphy – 6
Not many moments of note but didn’t put much of a foot wrong. Helped defensively, too.
Nick Woltemade – 6
Some nice touches and not as poor as in previous midfield showings but has to be stronger. Gets pushed about too easily.
Again, difficult to be too critical given it’s not his position but it’s fair to expect from a physical standpoint.
Harvey Barnes – 7
Not quite as effective as Gordon but did manage to cause Chelsea issues all game. A willing runner.
Anthony Gordon – 9
Looked very dangerous, even aside from his goal.
Forced an early yellow out of Wesley Fofana and the finish for his goal was perhaps more difficult than it looked, with Gordon needing to sort his feet out relatively quickly.
Went close a couple of times after the break too. Almost certainly Newcastle’s best striker now.
Was criticised for missing the Barca game due to illness but this was quite the response.
Subs:
Dan Burn – 6
Anthony Elanga – 6
Joelinton – 6
