While Newcastle United may have lost against Manchester United, the performance of Miguel Almiron was a huge positive.
All of the talk before the game was about Cristiano Ronaldo. All of the talk during the game was about Cristiano Ronaldo. After the game, all people will talk about is Ronaldo and his two goals.
But Newcastle’s performance was certainly encouraging despite the late collapse.
The Magpies had multiple opportunities in the first half, and arguably could have been ahead.
There were some great performances in black and white, but Almiron was probably the pick of the bunch.
The Paraguayan, who nearly wasn’t eligible to play, started on the right of midfield, with Steve Bruce changing the system to a 5-4-1.
Almiron has normally been playing as part of a midfield three, and has severely struggled to impact proceedings.
But at Old Trafford he was fantastic. His pace caused Manchester United real problems, and he was instrumental in Javi Manquillo’s goal. It was Almiron’s run from deep that led to our equaliser.
That moment gave him real confidence, You could see he wanted to get on the ball more, buzzing around the pitch.
He looked like the Almiron of old who was so exciting when he first arrived at the club. While the right of midfield still isn’t his best position, he is so much more influential when he plays further forward. Ideally, he should be playing on the left or just behind the striker.
But the 27-year-old should be very happy with his performance at Old Trafford, particularly after his tough start to the season.
Toon fans were certainly impressed, toasting Almiron’s performance despite another disappointing result.
