Newcastle United are on a five-match winning run going into this weekend’s game against Aston Villa, and will be looking to stretch it to six.
That would equal Newcastle‘s best winning run from earlier in the season, and could be another defining victory in the quest to qualify for the Champions League.
However, to do that Eddie Howe will need to end a barren run that has plagued the Magpies for almost a decade.
Newcastle’s record away to Aston Villa is shocking
Newcastle’s record at home against Aston Villa is brilliant. We beat them 4-0 earlier this season, and won 1-0 last season thanks to a Kieran Trippier free kick.
In fact, we have not lost to Villa at St James’ Park since April 2005, when Martin O’Neil’s team arrived in the North East and won 3-0. That was the famously the game when Newcastle had three players sent off. Kieran Dyer and Lee Bowyer were given reds for fighting with each other, while Steven Taylor got an early bath for a dramatic handball on the line.
But that was the last time Villa won on Tyneside. However, it is a different story at Villa Park.
While you do not have to go back as far as 2005 for an away victory, it is a fixture that Aston Villa have had the best of in recent years.
The last time Newcastle won at Villa Park was 14th September 2013. Goals from Hatem Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran gave Alan Pardew’s side a 2-1 victory.
Since then, Newcastle have played at Villa Park six times and failed to win any of them. We are currently on a three match losing streak at that stadium, producing some rotten performances under Steve Bruce.
Now Howe is calling the shots, and is the man tasked with picking up Newcastle’s first win at Villa Park for 10 years.
