In Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, Newcastle have the makings of a fearsome forward line.
The duo are ludicrously quick both with and without the ball, making them a nightmare to deal with.
But so far, Steve Bruce is yet to get the best out of the deadly duo. Saint-Maximin has impressed since returning to fitness and can excite fans, but the chances still aren’t flowing for the Magpies. As for Almiron, his barren run of no goals and no assists continues to torment him.
The Paraguayan international is really struggling, but was excellent when he first arrived at St James’ Park.
So what’s changed? Well, one of the big differences is his position. Under Rafa Benitez, Miggy played on the left of the front three. Under Bruce, he started as a striker before moving to the right wing. It’s clear that he isn’t comfortable out there, unable to influence proceedings like he did when he first arrived.
Going forward, Newcastle need to improve drastically. And one step Bruce must take is swapping his wingers. Almiron has the ability but his confidence is at an all time low. Playing in a more familiar role should give him a boost.
As for Saint-Maximin, surely he should be able to operate on the opposite flank. He’s very right-footed, and playing on the right should only improve his ability to get crosses into the box.
It’s a change Bruce must consider making against West Ham. It’s only a minor tweak, and if it doesn’t work out then we can easily revert back.
But it’s clear that the current plan isn’t working. Something must change.
